HUE MATSURI 2023 – Manga Meets Heritage | A Landmark Japan–Vietnam Partnership Project

HUE MATSURI 2023 was a cultural exchange festival held in the imperial city of Hue to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations between Japan and Vietnam.

The project was conceived around the theme Manga Palace, bringing together Japanese manga culture and the royal heritage of Vietnam.

Set at Hue Imperial City and Quốc Tử Giám, the event brought contemporary creative culture into a historic World Heritage setting.
It created a new cultural experience where tradition and innovation resonated.

Over two days, approximately 15,000 visitors attended and experienced:

  • Digital manga production workshops

  • Talk sessions with Japanese and Vietnamese artists

  • Cosplay, board games, and community exchange activities

  • Awards ceremony for manga, webtoon, and illustration categories

  • Live music performances featuring Japanese anime singer Pile and other artists

A wide range of programs was presented.

The event was held with support from the provincial government of Thua Thien Hue and other relevant institutions,
demonstrating the potential for Hue to evolve from a city of history into a city of creative industries.

HUE MATSURI was more than a festival.
It was also an experiment in a new model of cultural economy crossing borders through stories, art, and youth culture.

Through this project, RAROMA
embodied its commitment to creating memorable experiences by weaving together culture, creativity, and international collaboration.
